Cuttyhunk Island

K1WCC and K1KEK have activiated Cuttyhunk Island during the the Island on the Air Competition.  They also were activating the Cuttyhunk Island Lighthouse for the ARLS. They operated solely by battery power on the wet grass.  It has been raining in Massachusetts non-stop for the last month.  They had little shelter and they were required to haul everything from the boat to the top of the hill.  Of course, they used an Elecraft K3 for the operation.  Nothing but the best for these guys.  The radio was also small and light.  The vertical also looks light compared to other things.  Why not use a vertical on a salt-laden island?

Trip to Claremont NH

WA1NYC and I rode up to Claremont on Saturday.  We went on patrol for trains.  I saw a windjammer in action.  Apparently they have some hills in New Hampshire.  This had me worried.  I was heading for a quick race in Claremont.

We stopped at the Depot prior to the race.  We managed to grab a few photos of the Vermonter in action.  It was heading south for New York City.  When are they going to run a Boston-bound train?  It might be better for all concerned since only ONE person alighted the train at Claremont.  We did not see any activity on the short line.

The Claremont station is a nice bicycle shop with a full complement of bicycle accessories.  We also found some equipment rust- ing away near the old right of way from claremont to Sunapee.  I have a suspicion that this car was not from the B&M.  This car might had been running in pristine condition in Edaville only ten years, ago.  This was some where near Newport.  I did not think that it would be going anywhere, soon.
Here is a picture of the Vermonter.

Here is a picture from the bicycle race.  Some of the juniors are warming up on the course.  It was a closed quasi 4 corner loop.  The 3rd corner had some bend.  The 4th corner is the sharp turn.

Slow week in radio

I heard that WBCN is going to be no more.  I did not hear much on ham radio.  NX1Z is on the Azores Island.  I added him to my alarm list in the logging program.  Hopefully, it spots him in the cluster.  I did not fare well in the Attleboro race last week, either.
I am working on my family genealogy.  I have made progress fleshing out some of the remaining family members whom had lived in Ireland.  I have found traces of ones whom lived into the 1970’s and early 1980’s.  I am always looking for information on Quigleys from Loughrea in Galway; a direct ancestor was a Quigley.  Some of her nephews and nieces also came to live in Boston under her sponsorship.

This week on the radio

Nothing spectular to report to all of you readers.  Yesterday, I marked the day off early and talked to all the guys on the 67(Quincy 2 meter repeater) machine.  There was a lot of people on the machine in the middle of the day!  There seems to be a lot of trouble on the 67 machine, lately.  Lots of noise in the immediate periphery of 67 seems to mix with your signal.  If you do not have a very strong signal into 67, then the local noise mixes with your audio.  It is tough to copy.
K1JIY has been up to secret tricks.  Keep an eye on him.
