My friends, George and Tadd, went on a trip to see the final revenue trip for the Boeing LRV units on the Green Line. These units were created during a downturn in the aviation industry for Boston. MBTA created a dreamlist of items that were totally unpractical and Boeing did not quite any experience in producing something meant to use wheels in part for its main motive effort.
These were the units that I most remember from the Green Line and throughout the last twenty years or so I rode these units. They started a whole new trend in tram car design thought and service delivery. They were built by Boeing’s Helicopter division and they set the way for the MBTA’s recurring problem of having equipment stay on the rails. However, they had style and they were new. They replaced the old PCC that did not have air conditioning. Eventually, the units received some nice doors.
The whine of traction motors is something eerie but fun at the same time. These pictures were taken by my friend, Tadd. Notice the snow that is falling. Boston can get snow after the official start of Spring and these shots were only taken a few days before Spring was supposed to start.
