Bickford’s Finale

The Bickford’s Chain has closed.

I have copied a bit of the history from the corporate website.

Bickford’s history dates back to the 1920’s, when Samuel Bickford opened his first Bickford’s cafeteria. Throughout the next 40 years, Sam, and eventually his son, Harold, worked to expand their cafeteria chain throughout the Northeast and into California. However, it was not until 1959 that Harold introduced a new concept to New England, the first Bickford’s Pancake House - the first such specialty restaurant in New England which opened in Peabody, Massachusetts in October, 1959. The concept was a huge success.Over the next three decades, Bickford’s Pancake House chain slowly grew to include 30 restaurants throughout New England and became a family restaurant that focused on breakfast, along with lunch and dinner offerings. Within the early to mid - 90’s, the number grew to almost 70 and it continued to be known as a great New England breakfast tradition. As an expansion to the menu, fresh turkey, roasted daily in the restaurants was used for Turkey Club, Hot Turkey Sandwich and a traditional Turkey Dinner.
Within the past year, the Bickford’s chain has evolved and just like with the fresh turkey, other menu items were upgraded for overall improved lunch and dinner selections. For example, fresh seafood, delivered daily from Ipswich Shellfish Company, was a large addition to the fresh new menu. Top of the line products include scallops, haddock, whole-belly clams & lobster. The focus on preparation and execution to the guest was just as important as the quality of the products coming from the vendors, so complementary items were also brought in such as the purest vegetable oil for frying, the highest quality batter, fresh vegetables which are steamed to order, to make the overall meal a “wow” in the eyes of the guest. Along with the seafood, a twelve ounce, choice cut New York Sirloin, Black Angus burgers, sweet potatoes, extra virgin olive oil & balsamic vinegar for our crisp salad offerings are all added to the superb meals now available to Bickford’s guests. In spite of Bickford’s putting the emphasis on its quality of food, the public continued to fill the restaurants more at breakfast time than for lunch and dinner. To keep the breakfast customers satisfied while encouraging more business at lunch and dinner hours, in 2003, Bickford’s made a commitment to upgrade restaurant cosmetics, create new signs, apply for beer and wine licenses, change uniforms and improve service in a plan which will be completed by the end of 2004. At this point, Woburn, Braintree, Hanover, Brighton and Seekonk, Massachusetts have progressed into this new and improved Bickford’s, renamed Bickford’s Grille.According to Sandy Milley, the CEO & President of the company, “Our guests have responded really positively to the changes. We’ve kept the value in place while offering high quality meals during all parts of the day and that makes people come back more often.”Bickford’s can now be everything to everyone. A large focus has been placed on take-out for both individual meals as well as family-style and even off-site catering. Flat-screen T.V.’s have been added to the décor of each restaurant. Many of the locations even have private meeting rooms which can accommodate various groups. Bickford’s has a long history in New England and with the new improvements, continues to be a strong restaurant chain.

Since approximately 1986, hams have been gathering every Saturday at the Bickford’s in Hanover to socialize and discuss radio. The group has been meeting since the 1960’s, but the stay in the Bickford’s was long and enjoyable.

These are shots taken of many of the regular participants. Many members of the K1USN club are also members of the breakfast club. Included in the following shot are N1EY, WA1NYC, K1RV, N1ZZN, N1ZMD, W1QWT, W1BT and many of our other friends. In the photo album section, there are more pictures from the last breakfast. Christine, our waitress for the last fifteen years, was also in the group photo. Thank you, Christine!

Aves Island

YV0LIX has been suffering from intentional and malicious interference on 18.160. He was trying to work split and his receive frequency has been blasted with music.

The 17 meter op keeps QSY’ing instead of holding a frequency and making contacts. It finally settled down. I managed to work him split at about 11:15 EST. Thank god for sick days. I’m going at 1PM to the doctor. My card is on the way.

The Op was working stations in Germany and the United Kingdom in the period that he worked me. I heard him work European Russia too.

The DXpedition has suffered some unfornuate events including the death of YV0LIX. The DXpedition is using his call as tribute to his early demise.

The webpage for the DXpedition is at http://www.yv0.info/frames.html

A little history about the island is available from the website.

Spanish for Bird Island, this remote tiny Caribbean island lies west of the Leeward Islands chain 70 miles west of Dominica and 115 miles southwest of Montserrat. Only 375 meters long and 10 meters wide at the narrowest point, it rises only four meters above sea level. Because of this navigational danger, several ships have wrecked nearby. The island is a heaven for birds and green sea turtles, but is in substantial danger from erosion caused by rising sea levels. During some hurricanes, the island is completely submerged.

I’ve met people from Montserrat.  Those people have suffered badly.  The Carribbean is beautiful but it can hurdle many disasters and horror against man.

Isla Chinca del Centro (SA-073)

I just worked OC5I on 17 meters this morning. I have mailed the card off to DL5WM. A bunch of good hams from Belgium and Deutschland took off to Peru to activate this island and its’ lighthouse. This is an excellent strategy for a DXpedition as it provides a needed island and lighthouse.

There are pictures of the island at http://www.qsl.net/dl5se.

I have worked eighteen islands and I have eight confirmed as of today.

Tower Work

Dick Jolls K1GUG just sent me a shot of N1ZZN and I whisking off a tower section for the secret project.  I think that I look a little suspicious.  I only had four hours of sleep and I had to drive quite a few miles in order to complete the mission.

Bicycle Commuters

On a warm day in April of 2006, I took several photographs of bicycles and their owners in the intrepid voyage home.

Man 1.jpg This shot was taken towards the end of the afternoon looking towards the state house. The rider is heading down Beacon Street.
Man 2
This rider is enjoying himself and riding against the currents on the northern sidewalk of Tremont Street. Notice the toe clips.

Man3.jpg Here is a serious commuter. He has obviously put a lot of time and energy into research and planning for his commute. He is travelling on Beacon Street.

Latest DX Contacts

On April 21st, 2006
I talked to a nice fellow in the Maderias Islands. I also worked a station in Sicily.  I also talked to Rolf in Switzerland, again.

I just noticed that Logbook of the World had some incorrect matches.  I had the callsign of an Italian station recorded incorrectly.  He had received my call properly.  I’m stilling counting it as a QSO.  It was done with about 5 watts out of my 703.

I am up to 17 confirmed DXCC entities including LOTW credit.

ISS crew member gets early start on ham radio

Now completing his third week aboard the International Space Station, Expedition 13 ISS Flight Engineer Jeff Williams, KD5TVQ, already has been making contacts from NA1SS. Over the Easter weekend, Williams made “a handful of random contacts,” according to ISS Ham Radio Project Engineer Kenneth Ransom, N5VHO. The ISS Fan Club Web site reports that Williams exchanged Easter greetings April 15 with WB9IIV, and that N5VHO and WA4HT both heard NA1SS on FM voice while the ISS was passing over the US. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) school contacts are set resume in early May. Contacts are scheduled with Bob Jones High School in Madison, Alabama, on May 1, and with the Jaanimmarik School, in Kuujjuaq, Quebec, Canada, on May 4. NASA reports the Expedition 13 crew, headed by cosmonaut Pavel Vinogradov, RV3BS, has now settled in for its six-month stay in space and is looking forward to receiving a Progress rocket shipment of food, fuel and supplies on April 26.

YX0A operator reported SK, DXpedition adopts memorial call sign

YX0A Aves Island DXpedition team member José “Joe” Manuel Valdés Rodriguez, YV5LIX, reportedly died on the tiny Caribbean island April 21. He was 57. A radio amateur since 1987, Valdés was well known around the world as a DXer and contester on HF and VHF. Esteban Romagni, W4DTA/YV5DTA, reports in an e-mail shared with ARRL that his longtime friend suffered a heart attack, and the two physicians with the DXpedition team were unable to resuscitate him. Valdés’ death, at around 0400 UTC, occurred shortly after the YX0A DXpedition got under way. Since the news began circulating, hams around the globe have been posting condolence messages on the DX Summit Web site. The Aves Island DXpedition reportedly has obtained permission to use the memorial call sign YX0LIX until the DXpedition ends on or about May 1. Members of the Association of Radioamateurs of Venezuela and the Grupo DX Caracas are sponsoring the Aves Island (Isla de Aves) DXpedition. Valdés was the DXpedition’s digital modes coordinator and reportedly was planning to concentrate on digital modes during the last few days of operation.

The K7RA Solar Update

Geomagnetic activity was higher over the past week, with the average daily planetary A index rising over six points to 18. The most active days were Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15, when the planetary A index was 58 and 29. All this and auroras too were caused by a stiff solar wind meeting an interplanetary magnetic field pointing south, making Earth vulnerable.
